Delicious Indian sweets have a special place in the hearts of sweet-tooth lovers. Recently, Odisha received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag on its traditional sweet, Magji Laddu. This tasty sweet dish is also included in the famous chappan bhog served at the iconic Jagannath Temple in Puri. If you visited this popular religious site, then you must have relished Magji Laddu. Here’s a quick and easy recipe to make it at home.

The culinary scenes in Odisha are diverse and offer simple yet tantalising flavours. This state’s portfolio of regional sweets leaves you craving for more! Besides Chenna Poda and Khaja, there is more to it. Magji Laddu is finally receiving the attention and hype it deserves!

Recently, it was awarded the prestigious GI tag showcasing the culmination of culture, heritage, and community. Originating from Odisha’s Kalahandi district, Magji Laddu reflects the importance of the tribal community of Majhis’ culinary significance. Majhis were renowned for their skilful preparation of sweet delicacies and this laddu quickly became a traditional dessert among the locals.

A Simple Recipe Of This GI Tag Dish

Ingredients:

  • Wheat flour – 1 cup
  • Grated coconut
  • Ghee – ⅓ cup
  • Sugar or Jaggery (powdered) – ½ cup
  • Cardamom powder – ¼ tsp
  • Milk – 1 tbsp
  • Dry fruits (crushed) – ½ cup 

Preparation:

  1. In a bowl, put flour, milk and 3 tbsp of ghee. Mix well; it is more suitable if you warm up the ghee.
  2. Mix it thoroughly and sieve it for uniform granules.
  3. Take a pan, keep it on medium heat and roast this mixture with the remaining ghee till it turns reddish brown. 
  4. Now, add grated coconut, jaggery, dry fruits, and cardamom powder to the blend.
  5. Cook it until the jaggery is completely dissolved. Then, remove it from the heat and let it cool.
  6. When it is still slightly warm to the touch, form small round laddus with the help of your palms. 
  7. For garnishing, you may roll it in a mixture of grated coconuts and dry fruits. Or simply, add a piece of dry fruit on top of Magji Laddus and you are done!
