If you are a resident of Oman, then you will want to know that the certified version of the country’s national ID card and driver’s license is now legally recognised. This is across the sultanate, as announced by the Royal Oman Police. Here’s all you need to know about this development relating to the digital national ID and driver’s license.
Electronic National ID & Driver’s License To Be Legally Recognised
As revealed by the Royal Oman Police, residents and citizens can now access their documents directly through the official website. As revealed in a report by the Gulf News, access to electronic documents with no requirement to carry physical copies. This means the electronic documents now carry the same legal validity as their hardcopy counterparts.
This measure, as revealed in the report, is a part of the sultanate’s effort to streamline services. Not to mention, it also aims to increase convenience while reducing the need to visit the service centre. It also needs to strengthen a national group towards digital government.

This development comes at a time when the Royal Oman Police recently introduced flexible 1-3 year expat residence cards. This major change was also announced by the Royal Oman Palace, aiming to offer greater flexibility and enable streamlined procedures for renewal of residence. The decision has also extended the validity of personal identity cards. These are for Omani citizens, and it has been increased from the previous term of 10 years. As a result, it aligns with the duration of the Omani passport.

Documents To Be Renewed On Time!
Besides the new validity period and fee, residence and ID card holders must also renew their documents within 30 days of expiry. This must be done to remain compliant with the law. As it happens, the changes positively impact the large and diverse population. With a more convenient and cost-effective residency management, it is a part of the ongoing effort by the government to modernise civil status laws.
