According to an article which was recently published by The Indian Express or IE, 60 per cent of the meal options offered at the Paris Olympics will be vegan. This is because France is known throughout the world for its meats and cheeses and skipping them entirely would not be feasible at a global event like this.
The carbon footprint at the Paris Olympics is estimated to be 1.58 million metric tonnes of CO2. This is lower than both the Tokyo Olympics as well as the London Olympics. London Olympics had carbon emissions measuring 3.4 million metric tonnes and Tokyo emitted 1.93 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Apart from the drastic shift in food habits, Paris Olympics is also urging participants and audiences alike to use public transport. Contingent countries have already been convinced to travel via trains instead of planes. Moreover, bicycles are also available for local transport.

The IE article, citing the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, states that as much as 15 per cent of the global greenhouse gas emissions are caused by growing cattle for food.
Furthermore, the country aims to make an example of the event to show that such large-scale events can also be conducted in a manner that is friendly to the environment.
