Pet Parents In MP Will Soon Have To Pay Pet Taxes; Officials Cite Safety And Cleanliness As Reasons

If you’re a pet owner, more specifically an owner of one or more dogs, then this news is likely to make you mad. It seems that after Delhi and Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, Madhya Pradesh, too, will soon impose pet taxes. These pet taxes will only be levied on dog owners as dog excretion on road are a rampant problem. According to the officials, the tax is being levied to improve the safety and cleanliness of the region.

Pet Taxes Will Soon Be Levied In Madhya Pradesh

Over 40 councillors of the state unanimously voted for a pet tax to be levied on pet parents in Sagar city. However, reports have suggested that the taxes will be levied only on selective pet owners. The tax is only targeted towards people who own dogs and not any other kind of pet.

This resolution to tax the owners of dogs were taken to improve the safety and cleanliness of the city. Officials have mentioned that there is a rampant problem in the city, of dogs defecating openly on the streets. This is a safety and health hazard and hence, the officials resolved to tax the owners in the hopes that this will abate the issue.

Dog Owners Unhappy With This New Law

Needless to say, dog owners weren’t pleased with this new decision that the officials made. Many have even said that this new directive is absurd. Some dog owners seem to be okay with it provided the money is funnelled back into making the city more dog-friendly and opening facilities for them. This is the first time that Madhya Pradesh has had such a law put into place. Before this, Delhi and Prayagraj had similar laws enforced on pet owners.
