The Veer Savarkar International Airport is located in Port Blair. Earlier known as Port Blair Airport, this airport functions as a civic enclave. It shares airside facilities with the Indian Navy ship INS Utkrosh. Initially, there was only one terminal with a capacity of 1200 passengers. Recently, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the new integrated terminal building of the airport.

According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the new integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport would improve connectivity, ease of travel, and ease of conducting business. He inaugurated the terminal through video conferencing to officially open the new terminal, noting that it can accommodate roughly 50 lakh passengers yearly.

According to the prime minister, the new terminal has increased the number of passengers it can accommodate from the previous terminal’s 4,000 to 11,000 passengers. He even noted that ten planes can now be parked on the airfield at once. The new terminal at the Port Blair airport has an architectural design that resembles a shell-shaped structure portraying the sea and islands, and it cost ₹710 crore to build.

In order to reduce heat gain, the new airport terminal building has a double-insulated roofing system. It also has a skylights that maximise the amount of abundant natural sunlight that enters the building during the day. Additionally, it also has low heat gain glazing and LED lighting.

Rainwater collection in an underground water tank, an on-site sewage treatment plant with 100 per cent of treated wastewater repurposed for landscaping. Moreover, a 500 KW solar power plant are further characteristics of the terminal building.

This New Development Will Increase Employment & Boost Tourism

More planes and visitors, according to PM Modi, will increase employment opportunities and boost the local economy. He added that the parts of the island had not experienced progress for a very long time. He further remarked that the scope of development was limited to big cities.

According to him, the budget for Andaman and Nicobar has increased by a factor of two over the course of the last nine years compared to what the previous administration spent there.

In comparison to the previous administration’s spending of ₹23,000 crore during nine years, the current administration allotted ₹48,000 crore to Andaman and Nicobar.
