On Saturday, a Bengaluru woman was travelling on a Rapido bike from the Tin Factory area to Koramangala. The incident took place at around 8:30 pm. The woman said that as the Rapido driver arrived, he asked her to give him her phone, as his mobile’s battery was dead, so that he could navigate to her destination. The woman, understanding his situation, gave him her phone.

As the ride began, he started asking about her, and she normally answered. After a while, as they waited near a petrol pump for a refill, the man tried to touch her inappropriately while taking the key under the backseat. The woman was horrified as the man sat very close to her inner thigh as his backside touched her crotch.

She mentioned that it made her extremely uncomfortable, but she could not speak up. She kept praying to God to help her safely and quickly reach home. After a while, as he sat near her inner thighs, it became painful for her, and all she could do was pray, as she did not have the courage to slap him.

The Bengaluru woman was completely horrified, as after a while, the driver also started rubbing his feet on hers. When her house was just 3 km away, she asked him to stop and give her mobile back, but he stopped after 7-8 minutes.

When the woman reported it to Rapido customer service, they promised to investigate the situation and take the rider’s behaviour seriously. To her surprise, the customer service representatives also informed her that they would double check with the rider.

She added that a Rapido representative had told her the driver had been suspended, but he would not provide any supporting documentation.

Many people left comments on the article saying that women shouldn’t ride in bike taxis and that it would be safer to drive a car instead of a bike.

The woman marked these comments and said that this is exactly like asking women to not wear short clothes to be safe. Many people supported this and said that such comments are completely insensitive and she should not respond to them.

Others asked her to reach out to some NGOs who would genuinely help her with the same. Some of the users said that the next time something like this happens, she should raise her voice.
