Redditor Posts About Brother & Sister’s Struggles With Hotel Rejections For Unmarried Status; Netizens Ask, “Why Are They Moral Policing Adults?”

Recently, a Reddit user and their cousin who had planned a weekend trip to visit the Ajanta Ellora Caves faced a significant problem when trying to find accommodation. After a long drive, they wanted to book a hotel for the night, but they kept encountering the same frustrating issue: hotel rejections due to their unmarried status.

They initially contacted several hotels, discovering that the prices ranged from ₹4000 to ₹7000 per night. They eventually chose a hotel costing ₹3000. However, after booking and paying, they were informed that the hotel did not accept unmarried couples. This news was particularly frustrating, as the user and their cousin were family members—specifically, the user’s cousin was their mother’s brother’s son. Despite this, the hotel’s policy remained unchanged.

The user found this situation absurd and was perplexed by the inconsistency of the policies. Even hotels listed as “couple-friendly” rejected their request. This inconsistency raised questions about why hotels with such labels would not accept unmarried couples. The user and their cousin spent considerable time calling and searching, only to encounter the same problem repeatedly.

The user was reluctant to explain their predicament to their parents, feeling it was uncomfortable and embarrassing. The lack of a shared last name with their cousin further complicated matters, making it difficult to prove their relationship through identification. They found it uncomfortable to ask friends or family for recommendations or mention “couple-friendly” hotels due to the awkward nature of their situation.

Comments on the post range from “No one asks for marriage certificate. Just say you’re married if you can’t find anything” to “ Just say you’re married. Who’s gonna ask your marriage certificate?” One user suggested, “Adopt a kid for trip’s duration for verification purposes.”Another user added, “These hotel’s are on a ‘better be safe than sorry’ model.” Yet another user questioned, “But people are literally adults here, tf are they moral policing on fully grown adults?”

After discussing the issue with a friend, they learnt that some people do marry their cousins, which only added to their confusion. This revelation did not, however, resolve their immediate problem. According to the user’s last update, they were still searching for accommodation and would have to cancel the trip if they failed to find something suitable.
