Alcohol consumption has long been a topic of debate in health circles, especially when it comes to its connection with cancer. The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has released its 2024 Cancer Progress Report. It includes new research showing alcohol consumption is linked to six distinct cancer types and accounts for over 5% of cancer cases. Only obesity and cigarette smoking are considered to be greater risk factors for cancer than alcohol consumption, according to this report.
The Link Between Alcohol And Cancer
The AACR report identifies the following six types of cancer linked to alcohol intake:
- Head and Neck Cancers
- Oesophageal Cancer
- Liver Cancer
- Breast Cancer
- Colorectal/Colon Cancer
- Stomach Cancer
Remarkably, the report also highlights that modifiable risk factors account for 40% of all cancer cases. Alcohol use is highly ranked among these variables, along with eating patterns, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles. According to India Today, the American Cancer Society (AACR) report states that obesity, poor eating habits, alcohol use, and sedentary lifestyles account for almost 20% of cancer diagnoses in the United States.

The Importance Of Reduction
One striking statistic from the report is that people who cut back or stop drinking can lower their risk of alcohol-related cancers by 8% and their risk of all cancers by 4% when compared to people who drink more or stay the same.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) supports these results, saying that alcohol consumption is associated with at least seven cancer types. It includes some of the most common ones, like breast and colon cancer, as per the India Today reports. According to the WHO, there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption for one’s health.
Leading AACR author Rajarshi Sengupta advocates for warning labels on alcoholic beverages that specifically mention cancer and urges greater public awareness and education about the dangers of alcohol consumption.
The connection between alcohol consumption and cancer is increasingly clear. It also reveals a pressing public health issue that calls for lifestyle changes and awareness. As more research emerges, it becomes vital for individuals and communities to understand these risks and take proactive steps to mitigate them. Reducing alcohol can significantly contribute to lowering cancer risks and improving overall health.
