Riyadh Metro is one of the most awaited projects in the city. It was announced first in the year 2014 and now it is expected that it may open sometime later this year. Once the construction is complete, this public transport system is bound to transform public transport in Riyadh. Here’s all about this project.

Once it opens, the Riyadh Metro project is bound to reduce congestion in high-traffic zones. It is expected to be used by over 1 million passengers annually and as part of the Vision 2030 of Saudi Arabia. While there are several mega projects that have been announced in Riyadh, this is one of the most anticipated ones. In fact, it’s not just limited to the metro train, but also extent to the metro buses that will also start running this year.

It’s worth mentioning that this is a part of the five-phase plan in which phase 1 encompasses 340 buses that will serve 633 bus stops and stations. Once it is fully launched, the service is going to cover 1,900 km with more than 2,864 bus stations and stops that will be served by 842 buses. It’s worth mentioning that no official date for the launch of the project has been revealed so far. It is worth mentioning that there will be 84 metro stations in total with four key stations. These four stations will allow the passengers to change metro lines to and from the bus networks. These include the Qasr Al Hokm Metro Station, King Abdullah Financial District Station, Western Station, and Western Station.

In fact, three different kinds of carriages will be available with inclusions of singles, families, and VIPs. Singles will be used by single men, families will be reserved for families and lone females, and VIP section will be accessible to those who have VIP cards. As it happens, six lines have been proposed for Riyadh Metro, which includes blue line, red line, orange line, yellow line, green line, and violet line.

So, once the Metro is complete, it is bound to cater to 1.2 million people. And going by the report of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, it will also have parking space for many cars and these will be located across 21 locations. Each of these will have a capacity for 200 to 600 vehicles.
