What if your next holiday wasn’t planned around sightseeing, shopping or beaches, but around a marathon? That is exactly what the growing ‘run-cation’ trend is all about. Travellers are increasingly choosing destinations based on races they want to participate in, and then extending the trip to explore the city, try local food and experience the destination beyond the finish line.

What Is A Run-Cation?

According to Hindustan Times, unlike simply signing up for a race while on holiday, a run-cation puts the marathon at the centre of the itinerary. Travellers plan their flights, stay, recovery time and even pre-race activities around the event. This trend is particularly visible among younger travellers, for whom fitness, community and personal milestones are becoming part of the travel experience.

Simply put, a run-cation combines running and vacationing. Instead of travelling to a destination first and finding a race there, runners pick a marathon or running event they want to take part in and build their holiday around it.

The race becomes the main reason for the trip, while the destination adds the holiday experience. This could mean spending a few days acclimatising before the marathon, exploring local neighbourhoods, trying regional food and taking a slower sightseeing trip after the race.

It also means that a marathon is no longer just about the 42.195 km. For many travellers, it becomes a way to see a new city on foot while pursuing a personal fitness goal.

Why Are Travellers Choosing Marathon Holidays?

One reason behind the trend is the growing overlap between fitness and travel. Instead of treating a holiday and a fitness goal as two separate things, travellers are combining the two.

A race also gives the trip a clear purpose. There is something to train for before the holiday and something to look forward to once you reach the destination. The post-race itinerary can then become a more relaxed holiday.

Where Are People Going For Run-Cations?

Some of the biggest names in marathon tourism are also major travel destinations in their own right.

1. Tokyo

Tokyo combines a globally recognised marathon with the chance to experience one of Asia’s most distinctive cities. From its food and neighbourhoods to temples, shopping districts and pop culture, runners can easily extend their race trip into a longer holiday.

2. London

The London Marathon has become a bucket-list event for many runners, while the city itself offers plenty to explore before and after race day.

3. Berlin

For runners, Berlin offers the appeal of one of the world’s major city marathons. For travellers, it adds museums, historic landmarks, food and nightlife, making it easy to combine the race with a traditional city break.

4. New York

A marathon through New York offers a very different kind of sightseeing experience. The race route itself becomes part of the attraction, while the city gives runners plenty of reasons to stay longer.

5. Sydney

Sydney has become an even bigger destination for marathon travellers after joining the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
