Mecca’s Grand Mosque Introduces 84+ New Signs & Codes Inside To Help Pilgrims Move Easily

Finding your way inside the Grand Mosque during Hajj or even Umrah can honestly feel overwhelming, especially when millions of people are moving together at the same time. One wrong turn and suddenly you’re stuck trying to figure out which gate or corridor leads where.

Grand Mosque Introduces Smart Navigation System 

Now Saudi authorities are trying to make that experience a little less stressful. The General Authority for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque has launched a new smart navigation and geographic coding system inside the Grand Mosque in Mecca. The idea is pretty straightforward to help worshippers move around more easily without getting confused in packed areas.

Pilgrims Will Now See New Codes And Direction Signs

Under the new system, officials have added coding markers on columns across the mosque’s ground floor. These markers work like location points, helping people identify exactly where they are inside the massive complex.

For many pilgrims, especially first-time visitors, the Grand Mosque can feel huge and difficult to navigate. There are multiple entrances, prayer areas, corridors and levels, all filled with crowds moving at once.

Authorities also installed 84 new directional signs inside the Masaa area, where pilgrims walk between Safa and Marwa during Sa’i rituals. The signs are designed to stand out more clearly so visitors can spot directions faster, even in crowded conditions.

The Whole System Is Connected Together

What makes this project slightly different is that it’s not just random signs placed around the mosque. The navigation system links gates, walkways and important landmarks together so people can move between different areas more naturally.

Officials say the system has also been designed around crowd control and safety, especially during Hajj and Ramadan when the number of visitors rises sharply. Sign sizes, placements and layouts were apparently planned based on how people actually move inside the mosque during busy periods.

A Bigger Push To Improve The Pilgrim Experience

Saudi authorities have been introducing several upgrades across pilgrimage sites in recent years, from transport systems to digital services and crowd management tools.

This latest step seems focused on something simple but important to helping people spend less time feeling lost and more time focused on worship.
