The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, has launched a Saudi Architecture Characters Map that features 19 distinct architectural styles. These are inspired by the diverse geographical and cultural characteristics of the kingdom. It highlights the kingdom’s commitment towards celebrating its architectural heritage and enhancing the quality of life while modernising the urban landscape in the Saudi city. As part of Vision 2030, the Crown Prince also emphasised that it reflects the kingdom’s cultural and geographical diversity. Moreover, it highlights the importance of sustainable urban planning that is harmonised with the local environment.
It Includes 19 Distinct Styles
Coming to the 19 different architectural styles, these are as follows: Central Najdi, Northern Najdi, Tabuk Coast, Madinah Rural, Sarawat Mountains, Aseer Escarpment, Abha Highlands, Bisha Desert, Najran, Al-Ahsa Oasis, Tuhama Foothills, Tuhama Coast, Farasan Islands, Inner Madinah, Hejazi Coast, Taif Highlands, Al-Qatif Oasis, East Coast, and Eastern Najdi.

At this point, it’s worth mentioning that each architectural style includes three distinct typologies. These are Traditional Typology, Transitional Typology, and Contemporary Typology. Saudi architecture aims to not only elevate urban landscapes and cities but also enrich the architectural diversity of the kingdom. Not to mention, it will also indirectly contribute to the economic growth as it makes the city more attractive to the visitors and tourists. The Saudi architecture will be implemented in the hased manner.
The Implementation Will Be In A Phased Manner
The first phase will focus on Taif, Makkah, Al-Ahsa, and Abha. This will target major government buildings, projects, and commercial structures. As it happens, these efforts to implement Saudi Architecture are driven by partnerships. Not to mention, architectural designs will also be supporting engineers and designers. They will be doing so through engineering guidelines, training, workshops, and skill development programmes that will ensure the highest standards of sustainability and quality.
We truly can’t wait to see the new structures that will be inspired by the guide in the kingdom.
