The month of Sawan is finally here. Sawan or Shravan is the fifth month in the Nanakshahi calendar. The 2022 Shravan month begins on July 14 and ends on August 12 with Shravan Purnima. During this pious month, devotees all around India worship Lord Shiva. Indian tradition says that anyone who maintains a fast on a Monday during Shravan, will have all the wishes granted. So if you are one of the devotees observing this fast, here’s a list of foods that you must avoid while fasting.

1. Dairy Products And Green Leafy Veggies

Dairy products tend to create an imbalance of the Vata dosha. Hence according to traditional beliefs, anyone fasting during Sawan month must avoid consuming dairy products. Another important food to avoid is leafy vegetables. Stay away from dishes that contain these as leafy veggies boost the body’s bile content, and as a result increase the Vata dosha.

2. Alcohol

If you have decided to fast in the holy month of Sawan, you have to be very cautious with what you consume. If you are a party person, it’s better you avoid those for the month. Parties basically mean fun and liquor! And that’s the one thing you totally need to stay away from if you are fasting. Drinking alcohol equals sinning in Sawan month. Alcohol is considered as a polluted substance that instills negative energy into your body. So try avoiding any alcoholic drink during this month.

3. Skip Non vegetarian Dishes

Sawan is considered a pious month. And people fast only because they want to keep their body pure. According to traditional beliefs, consuming non vegetarian food means you are killing other living organisms. So if you have decided to fast for Lord Shiva, it’s better you stay away from non vegetarian dishes. So it is advisable for you to skip meat, fish, and eggs during this month.

4. Brinjal

Abstain from eating brinjals while fasting during the Sawan month. A lot of people consider it a superstition but it actually has more to do with the earth. Sawan also calls for storms and vegetables like brinjals are more inclined to bother sullying in this month. So it’s better to avoid eating them. Apart from this, if you refer to Hindu scriptures you will find Brinjal being referred to as impure. So in spiritual occasions, devotees avoid consuming this vegetable.

5. Onion And Spices

Fasting in Sawan month means eating bland food, devoid of spices and onion. Some people even skip oil. Red chilli powder, coriander powder, table salt, and other spices besides salt, must be avoided in this month. Apart from spices, you must also avoid onion and garlic and only go for a satvik dinner.
