Indian Coffee house is not just an ancient coffee house- it’s more of nostalgia and a place that reminds us of the legacy of Indian coffee. While the Indian coffee house is located across several cities in India, their Shimla branch, which is nestled on the mall road, has always been special. Flocked with tourists, the dainty coffee shop has managed to be relevant even today. However, the iconic joint is now on the brink of closure. Here’s everything you must know about it.

Shimla’s Iconic Indian Coffee House To Shut After Six Decades

After the closure of the iconic Baljees restaurant in July 2019, Shimla’s famous Indian Coffee House is about to shut soon. The coffee house couldn’t bear the wrath of the pandemic, and as a result, they have decided to shut it. On this, manager of Indian Coffee House, Atma Ram, said,

“The sales have dipped drastically during the pandemic and employees have not been paid salary for almost a year now and it is becoming tough to survive. We are giving Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 to staff to run their homes.”

With No Bussiness And Crores Of Liabilities, The Coffee Shop Is Finding It Difficult To Sustain

Speaking about the struggles during the lockdown, he also said that there was no business last year, and most employees are surviving on loans amid the pandemic. The condition deteriorated over the year, and now the coffee house has only 7-8 branches with a staff of over 250 employees while the liabilities have increased to Rs 8-9 crore.

The Indian Coffee House In Shimla has been there for the residents for over six decades now. I remember my time when I last visited the coffee house, just before the pandemic struck us in March 2020. And as I write this, it makes me quite sad to even comprehend that the next time I visit Shimla, I may not be able to enjoy a cup of coffee and scrambled eggs at the Indian coffee house.

PM Narendra Modi was also a regular at the coffee house when he was the BJP in charge of Himachal. He even stopped to sip coffee at this place while returning to the helipad during his visit to Shimla in 2017.

People, who are regular visitors to the coffee house, are sad with the news are now posting on social networking sites to raise funds to save the 60-year-old venture. We hope that it gets saved.
