Sholay, the iconic Bollywood film known for its legendary line “Kitne aadmi the?”, is clocking 50 years. To mark the occasion, its fully restored version, including deleted scenes, is set to premiere at the prestigious II Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna, Italy. It’s truly a proud moment in cinematic history as the uncut version of Ramesh Sippy’s cult classic will be screened on 27 June 2025, on the grand open-air screen in Piazza Maggiore. Originally released in 1975, the multi-starrer featured some of Indian cinema’s biggest names, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Amjad Khan, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, Jaya Bachchan, and more. It became an instant hit and also one of the most iconic films ever made in India. To honour its 50th anniversary, we will take a look at the real-life shooting locations of Sholay.
Interestingly, the filmmakers chose Ramanagara, a town near Bengaluru, Karnataka, as the main shooting location. They transformed it into the fictional town of ‘Ramgarh’ for the movie. Let’s take a look at these 5 spots, the fans of Sholay should visit at least once.
5 Shooting Locations Of Sholay
1. Ramadevara Betta, Ramanagara
This rocky hill in Karnataka, now a vulture sanctuary, famously served as the shooting location of Gabbar Singh’s hilltop hideout. The legendary line “Kitne aadmi the?” was shot right here. Today, Ramadevara Betta attracts not just bird watchers but also Sholay fans and trekkers who want to relive a piece of film history.
2. Village Of Ramanagara
The dusty roads and village square of this town doubled as the fictional town of Ramgarh in the movie Sholay. Though the original sets are now gone, the unique landscape is easily recognisable and takes us back to the memories of the film. Die-hard fans can easily recognise spots from their favourite scenes while walking through the area.

The bridge, still in use today, is located near Ramanagara Railway Station and is considered one of the most iconic shooting spots in Hindi cinema. Fans especially come here to look at the bridge, which was once surrounded by the famous Bollywood stars.
4. Savandurga Hills
Located about 60 km west of Bengaluru, Savandurga featured in scenes where Jai and Veeru ride on horseback or plan their attacks against Gabbar and his gang. Many fans still visit these easily recognisable hills to relive the magic of those iconic scenes, filmed 50 years ago.
5. SRS Hills (Shree Revana Siddeshwara Betta)
The filmmakers of this iconic movie used the rugged hills near the Ramadevara Betta as a backdrop in several landscape and action sequences. The terrain also helped to give Sholay its raw, rugged aesthetic. It remains a popular spot for trekkers and fans of this iconic movie.
