France’s transport minister, Clement Beaune, announced the signing of a new law in France. According to this law, the country has announced a ban on short-haul domestic flights in places where train journeys are available. The journeys that can be easily completed within two and a half hours by train will no longer have flight services. It looks like France is taking another step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Short-Haul Domestic Flights Banned In France
The country has announced a ban on short-haul flights on routes where train travel is easily available. While announcing this, Beaune said that this is a step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
He also said that as the country is fighting to decarbonize their lifestyles, they find no point in justifying the use of flights in cities that can easily benefit from train services.
For now, only three routes have been banned. These routes are the cities of Bordeaux, Nantes, and Lyon. The connecting flights will not be affected. For the application of the ban, the air route must have a good, high-speed rail alternative, making it possible to easily travel between cities. The time taken for this must be less than two and a half hours.

Travellers To Spend At Least Eight Hours
According to the ban in France, there should be enough trains, both early and late, running in order to let the travellers spend at least eight hours.
Some people have actually criticised French President Emmanuel Macron for pushing down proposals that were good for the environment. This included a ban on flights where there are train journeys of less than four hours available.
Many critics have pointed out that the ban on flights does not do any good in terms of climate concerns. The high-speed trains had already pulled passengers away from opting for flights.
The ban imposed on the three routes represents only 0.3% of emissions produced from flights that take off from Mainland France.
