Weeks after a Singapore Airlines’s London-Singapore flight experienced extreme turbulence that resulted in dozens of injuries and one death, the airline has sent offers of compensation to its passengers. In a statement published on their Facebook page, Singapore Airlines offered a minimum compensation of $10,000 to passengers with minor injuries. For those with serious injuries, the airline has invited them to discuss a “compensation offer to meet each of their specific circumstances.”
Singapore Airlines Offers Compensation To Turbulence-Hit Passengers
Singapore Airlines has sent offers of compensation to passengers who were travelling with them on the turbulence hit London-Singapore flight on May 21. They took to their Facebook page to issue a statement about the same. According to the post, all passengers who sustained minor injuries have been offered $10,000. Furthermore, for passengers with serious injuries, the airline has mentioned that they are open to discussing an offer to meet their specific needs.
The airline will also “provide a full refund of the airfare to all passengers” and this includes “those who did not suffer any injuries.” They will also “receive delay compensation in accordance with the relevant European Union or United Kingdom regulations.”
On May 21, Singapore Airlines’ flight SQ321 from London to Singapore encountered sudden and extreme turbulence while it was flying over Myanmar. The turbulence was so hard that passengers were thrown into the ceiling due to its impact. As per reports, a 73-year-old passenger lost his life, 22 people suffered from spinal injuries, and about six suffered head injuries during the turbulence. This includes a two-year-old who suffered a concussion.
Singapore Airlines issued a statement of apology after the unfortunate incident earlier. They have now decided to offer compensation to the injured passengers.
Open To Discuss Compensation For Passengers With Serious Injuries
Showing their commitment to supporting the affected passengers, Singapore Airlines has invited passengers with serious injuries to discuss the appropriate compensation, depending on their needs. All affected passengers will receive their offers of compensation via email, the airline has confirmed.
In the post, they mentioned, “For those who sustained more serious injuries from the incident, we have invited them to discuss a compensation offer to meet each of their specific circumstances when they feel well and ready to do so. Passengers medically assessed as having sustained serious injuries, requiring long-term medical care, and requesting financial assistance are offered an advance payment of$25,000 to address their immediate needs. This will be part of the final compensation that these passengers will receive.”
