The air fares this week have come down significantly by about 50 percent on some routes, bringing a sigh of relief for all the domestic fliers. This fall in prices was seen on some of the domestic routes. The reason behind this is the order issued by the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) to rationalise as well as monitor their increasing prices. The prices had skyrocketed in the past few months.

Sky High Air Fares Come To Ground

The airfares have finally come down after skyrocketing in the past few months. The Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia met the representatives of various airlines on June 5. The meeting is the actual reason behind the relief.

The minister advised them to self-monitor the prices on some of the routes. The routes that were affected by the suspension of Go First Airlines’ operations on May 3.

Approximately nine routes—Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Pune, Pune-Delhi, Delhi-Srinagar, Srinagar-Delhi, Delhi-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Delhi, Delhi-Leh, and Leh-Delhi—had average day-ahead fares that were available for booking on June 13 that were lower than those on June 5, according to data gathered by MoCA from booking portals.

Mumbai-Delhi is the only route for which the average flight cost has increased. According to data from MoCA, similar trends may be seen when comparing the week-ahead and month-ahead fares between June 13 and June 5.

The week-ahead rates on the Delhi-Leh and Delhi-Ahmedabad sectors saw the biggest drops, totaling 56 percent, among the 10 routes. The segment between Ahmedabad and Delhi has the lowest rate (10%). The average week-ahead airfare increased by 13% for the Mumbai-Delhi route.

The “twin demand increase” that the airline industry is seeing during the ongoing peak summer travel season is what Scindia had linked to the recent spike in airfares.  (As per The Indian Express)
