According to the latest report, 20 major wildfires are burning across Spain, and firefighters in the country have been struggling to contain them. Several Wildfires In Spain

According to The Indian Express, 20 wildfires in Spain occurred amid extreme heat. The most-affected region was Galicia in the northwest, where several fires had merged into a massive blaze. This severe incident forced the closure of the rail and highway services. This is Southern Europe’s worst wildfire season in almost 20 years, with Spain suffering from major damage.

As per the EU’s European Forest Fire Information System, this year, over 158,000 hectares in Spain were damaged because of wildfires. The 158,000 hectares is almost the size of metropolitan London. As per The Indian Express, three people were killed because of wildfire-related incidents, and neighbouring Portugal is also fighting to handle the out-of-control wildfires. As per Al Jazeera, Galician authorities have advised citizens to stay indoors and limit going out. They have been asked to wear masks to avoid inhaling smoke.

Measures To Control Wildfires

During a press briefing in Ourense, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that difficult days lie ahead as the hot weather is not helping the authorities control the raging wildfires. He also confirmed that to control this severe outbreak of wildfires, they have deployed 500 more troops, bringing the total to 1,900 troops working together. Spain’s weather agency AEMET warned that temperatures could increase up to 45 °C in some areas.

France and Italy have already sent their aircraft to Spain to help contain the wildfires. Two more water-dropping planes from the Netherlands are expected to join soon. Virginia Barcones, head of the Civil Protection Agency, has said that they are expecting firefighters from other countries, too. She also added that the temperature will drop from Tuesday, but for now, the situation is “very adverse.”

We hope that the country recovers from this difficult situation soon.
