Sunil Chhetri: Not Easy To Only Have Veg Food As A Sports Person But I Have Help

Sunil Chhetri

For this exclusive Sunday Brunch episode, Sunil Chhetri, the megastar and the captain of the Indian football team, joined our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani. Captain Sir is always a delight to be with and we talked about food, travel, football and more. We learned that he has gone vegetarian over the last couple of years due to football. Following this decision is not as easy as it sounds. Read on to find out.

Sunil Chhetri Told Us That As A Player It Isn’t Easy To Indulge Just In Veg Food

Sunil Chhetri shared with us that it has been five years since he fully went vegetarian. For this, even his mother taunts him! He also told us that he used to adore his mother’s home-cooked mutton and that having non-vegetarian food was an out-of-the-world experience for him. You could see it in his eyes and the way he talked about non-veg food, he was clearly a fan.

Then he continued by saying, “You know Kamiya, it’s not easy. As a sports person to only eat vegetarian food…it takes a lot of effort.” He was letting us know that for a sports person who trains vigorously, consuming just vegetarian food is not always easy because energy levels need to be high during regular training and games. He mentioned that people shouldn’t just blindly follow him by watching this video and go on to eat just a piece of roti and pyaaz cause it takes a “lot of different stuff on the plate”. He is urging people to eat a balanced diet.

Along with different variants of vegetarian food, he also has help from a lot of people which is the reason why he can maintain a strict vegetarian diet. Hence, his efforts, planning and the help he gets from people around make it possible for him to have a balanced vegetarian diet. This, in turn, yields results on the football ground.

Sunil Chhetri shared with us, “I have felt tremendous difference when I used to eat dairy and non-veg a lot and when I don’t consume at all; recovery is much much better.” Vegetarians are recommended to eat larger quantities since a great chicken or mutton steak can provide you with just the right amount of protein. For vegetarians, however, it is a combination of rajma, chickpeas, broccoli, and some nuts for that same steak protein, she informed us. The portion size differences are pretty much evident for veg and non-veg meals.
