Trekkers, we have good news for you! Tamil Nadu is all set to restart trekking again officially. After halting trekking for six years following the tragic Kurangani Hills forest fire that claimed 36 lives, the state looks forward to a new chapter. Tamil Nadu Restarts Trekking After 6 Years; Will Launch 40 Trails

As per a report by The New Indian Express, trekking enthusiasts will get a glimpse of the verdant landscapes of Tamil Nadu. The government will open 40 ‘safe’ trekking routes in the state which are located in 15 forest divisions. By July end, if all things go as planned, these trekking routes will be open to the public for bookings.

Tamil Nadu shut down all its trekking routes in 2018 after the Kurangani Hills forest fire. This tragic incident led to the death of 23 trekkers and other civilians. While trekking routes were later notified, these activities could never take off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Revamped Trails In Collab With Local Community

After six years, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to not just resume trekking but also create an atlas containing 40 trek routes. Basic amenities will be established on the 40 routes at a cost of ₹4 crore. Supriya Sahu, the Additional Chief Secretary of Environment Climate Change & Forests Tamil Nadu took to X to announce the same. She stated that people can go on their favourite treks by booking treks online.

While the 40 trekking routes are existing trails, however, they have been revamped. The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has partnered with the local community to upgrade these trekking trails. With the advent of the state resuming trekking, it’s a fascinating way for people to connect with nature. Supriya also shared pictures of the posters. One can see pictures of Tamil Nadu’s first trekking atlas. There’s also an announcement that public bookings will begin soon. As per a report published by TNIE, the portal for booking will begin by July end.
