The Idukki Pillayar Temple is a small Hindu shrine located in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. The temple is known for its rock-cut architecture, a one-foot-wide stone passage, and a unique ritual that devotees have followed for generations. It has recently gained a lot of attention on social media for this unusual tradition. Here’s what makes this temple so special.
Century-old Idukki Pillayar Temple Is Known For Its Narrow Passage Ritual
The century-old shrine, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, is located on the 14-km-long Girivalam path and is known for its narrow stone passage, which is just one foot wide. But this shrine is not like other temples in India. At Idukki Pillayar Temple in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, devotees have to squeeze through the narrow gap between two stone pillars to offer their prayers. Surprisingly, this temple has no idol!
According to CNBC TV18, there is a local belief that passing through this narrow passage brings good fortune, removes negative energy, and relieves people of physical pain and migraines. Not just that, some devotees also believe that following this ritual can ward off witchcraft and even cure certain illnesses.
Devotees have been following this ritual for generations, and there are hundreds of videos on social media showing people trying to pass through the narrow passage. You won’t believe that the passage is so narrow that it is said to be almost equal to the width of a human skeleton!

Safety Rules & Timings
Apart from the local legend, this ritual also symbolises letting go of ego, pride and attachment to materialistic things. Devotees humble themselves by passing through such a tight space. However, the ritual can also be risky, which is why the temple has now announced new rules. According to The Hindu, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department has restricted entry for certain devotees at the Idukki Pillayar Temple. These include devotees with obesity, those who are unwell, and senior citizens.
The department has also installed steel beams about one foot apart at the temple entrance. Only devotees who are able to pass through the gaps between the steel beams will be allowed to worship. Moreover, security personnel have also been deployed to ensure the safety of devotees.
If you plan to worship at the Idukki Pillayar Temple, there are some things to keep in mind. It remains open from 6 am to 8 pm every day, including Sundays. Devotees are allowed to worship round the clock only on Pournami days.
