Heavy rainfall was witnessed in Tamil Nadu on Saturday. The Chennai District Administration has announced that all schools will be closed for the day due to the expected heavy precipitation. Tamil Nadu has received an orange signal from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), alerting government authorities to remain vigilant.

Tamil Nadu Faces November Rainfall 

The present downpour period is expected to continue until November 7th, according to a regional meteorological center in Chennai, as reported by The Hindu. The weather service reports that heavy rainfall has been experienced in the southern state of Tamil Nadu due to a trough over the Bay of Bengal off its coast. 

According to the Hindu report, the trough may cause rain on Saturday in areas including Coimbatore, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram that ranges from 11.5 cm to 20.4 cm in intensity. (As per Live Mint)

Many locations in south Tamil Nadu have seen heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours, with Chidarambaram receiving the most at 8 cm, the state’s total for the day. Up until Saturday morning, a lot of other locations, including Meenambakkam, Madurai, Vellore, Thanjavur, Taramani, Villivakkam, and Pallikaranai in Chennai, had light to moderate rainfall.

Increased Monsoon Activity Expected

An increased monsoon activity is expected to begin on Saturday, according to the Additional Director General of Meteorology, though it will be sporadic and may even be bright during the day. Up to Sunday, Chennai may get sporadic moderate rains along with thunderstorms and lightning. In the meantime, twelve 400-member NDRF teams have been sent to Chennai to begin rescue operations right away. 

According to a TOI report, the state government has designated monitoring officers in each of the 15 districts and the Greater Chennai Corporation zones. In Tamil Nadu, the northeast monsoon has continued to be insufficient this year. The state has only received 12 cm of total rainfall so far, which is 40% less than the average of 19 cm.

Rain Caught Netizens Off Guard

According to the English Daily, districts including Chennai, Ariyalur, Chengalpattu, Krishnagiri, and Kallakurichi have already seen a 70% decrease in monsoon rain. The nonstop rain on Friday in Chennai caught students and office workers off guard. The rain continued for more than an hour and a half during rush hour, flooding parts of south Chennai.

S. Balachandran, Additional Director General of Meteorology, told reporters that Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, had received a maximum of 8 cm of rain in the previous 24 hours. He said that in the following three days, there would be light to moderate rain in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

He claimed that during the current Northeast Monsoon, which began on October 1 and is still going strong, the area has received 12 cm of rain, 40% less than the average of 19 cm.
