Thailand: Viral Video Of Monkey Handling Traffic Stuns Netizens, PETA Raises Wildlife Concerns

A wild monkey handling traffic in Thailand has taken the Internet by storm. The clip shows the monkey standing in the middle of a busy road, gesturing like a traffic cop to direct vehicles. While the sight of a monkey controlling traffic would seem funny, officials believe that it could be a sign of deeper environmental conditions. Specifically, urbanisation and deforestation are forcing animals closer to urban communities, causing such unusual encounters. Though this incident appears harmless, it raises concerns about how human activities are affecting wildlife behaviour.

The clip triggered a storm of social media reactions, as users posted mixed reactions ranging from amusement to concern. Some members of the public laughed at the antics of the monkey and complimented it for its intelligence, jokingly calling for it to be issued an official uniform. Others questioned the gravity of wildlife adjusting to human-dominated environments.

One user said, ‘This is sad and funny. We are making animals live in our world rather than preserving theirs.’ Another posted, ‘The monkey is performing better than some traffic officers I have seen!’

The video clip has not only amused but also raised the issue of living together between human beings and animals in fast-developing urban settlements.

Although this accident has been a source of merriment to many, it coincides with serious concerns by animal rights group PETA about the exploitation of monkeys in Thailand. The group has been pressing for an end to the practice of using monkeys in the coconut trade, where the monkeys are trapped, chained, and compelled to climb coconut trees to collect coconuts.

PETA’s campaign has prompted worldwide brands to commit to not using monkey labour for their coconut products. As the awareness increases, numerous global companies have begun taking action to remove unethical practices.

But the problem is rampant, and it is calling for more stringent laws and greater protection of Thailand’s wildlife. This monkey traffic handling experience is a testament to the animal’s intellect and the influence of human activity on their natural behaviours.
