In an episode of Sandese Aate Hai, our Editor-in-Chief Kamiya Jani sat down with Major General GD Bakshi and spoke to him about his journey as a soldier. He opened up about his early days in the academy, camaraderie in the army, and even opened up about an emotional incident that inspired him to join the forces.
Major General GD Bakshi Opens About A Heartbreaking Incident
Having seen the lives of soldiers at the borders and their rigorous training, Kamiya wanted to understand the psyche of soldiers during a war. She asked Major General GD Bakshi, a war veteran of the Indo-Pak war in 1971, what goes on in the heads of the people on the frontline.
Answering this, Major General Bakshi opened up about an emotional incident in his life and shared about his elder brother. He described him as “tall, dark, handsome” and an amazing cricketer. “He joined the army, he became a captain, and he became a martyr in the war of 1965,” he shared.
Major General GD Bakshi revealed that he died after stepping on a land mine that ended up destroying his brother’s body completely. He added that his body turned into pieces and the Army had to perform his cremation near the battleground itself as it was in very bad shape.
An emotional Major General Bakshi shared how his family only received an urn with his brother’s ashes. He spoke to the soldier about the details of the incident and shared that he couldn’t hold back his tears at that time. Seeing him teary-eyed, the soldier told him, “Sahab, aap ro nhi sakte. Aapko badla lena hai.”

In 1965, shaken by the incident and inspired by the words of the soldier, Major General GD Bakshi took the National Defence Academy (NDA) exam, despite the hesitation of his family. He opened up about how he loved to read and was very studious. His father wanted him to become an IAS officer as he was still shaken after losing a son. He was told that he would be a misfit in the army, but despite it all, he insisted and became one of the most decorated army officers in the country.
