We can never discuss Bengaluru without mentioning traffic at least once. Over the past years, the city received many recognitions globally. However, it became infamous for a strange reason — its unbearably long traffic jams. The TomTom Traffic Index 2023 revealed data about Asia’s worst cities for traffic and unfortunately, Bengaluru topped this list.
Bengaluru Becomes Asia’s Worst City For Traffic Congestion
The Karnataka capital is now the worst city in the entire continent for traffic movement. Why did the city rank among the most traffic-congested cities in Asia? According to information provided by the TomTom Traffic Index 2023, drivers usually spend an average of 28 minutes and 10 seconds to cover a distance of just 10 kilometres. It is estimated that folks in Bengaluru spend about 132 additional hours every year remaining stuck in traffic snarls during peak hours.
The population in this city is on the rise. On the other hand, steps are being taken to control the rush and improve urban infrastructure to reduce traffic congestion issues and focus on traffic management. Despite taking the necessary steps, severe traffic-related concerns continue to disrupt people’s travel plans every day. Sadly, road transportation in this city is slower than in many places in Asia.
Pune also made it to this surprising list of Asia’s worst cities for traffic in the second position. According to the TomTom Traffic Index 2023, 27 minutes and 50 seconds is the average time to travel 10 kilometres. Almost 28 minutes per 10 kilometres is indeed a lot of time. Manila in the Philippines has been enlisted in the third position to cover the same distance with an average travel time of 27 minutes and 20 seconds.
