What was once a regular suburban stop in Bhopal, Rani Kamalapati Railway Station has now redefined what a railway station in India can look and feel like. Airport-like facilities, trendy architecture and private operation have now carved out a new niche for Indian Railways’ modernisation journey. While metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru were expected to lead this change, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh proudly hosts India’s first private and world-class railway station.

Rani Kamalapati Railway Station, formerly Habibganj Railway Station, was renamed in November 2021 in honour of the Gond queen of the 18th century. Operated under the West Central Railway zone, it is the headquarters of the Bhopal railway division.

What distinguishes this station is its public-private partnership model. This station was redeveloped under Indian Railways’ station modernisation programme and is the first station in the country to be run by a private organisation. It perfectly demonstrates what can be achieved when vision and infrastructure planning come together.

As reported by Zee News, this state-of-the-art station is equipped with facilities one would normally associate with modern airports. Travellers can enjoy a fully air-conditioned lobby, high-speed lifts, 24/7 power backup, and purified drinking water. The station also offers a large covered parking area, multiple retail shops, food courts, a convention centre, office space, and even a hotel.

The most impressive aspect is its emphasis on convenience and accessibility. Automatic ticketing, clean platforms, and clear signage ensure a trouble-free journey for every commuter. It even features a super-speciality hospital and automobile showrooms within the complex, making it a model for future multi-use transport hubs.

Rani Kamalapati Railway Station is a stop for some premium trains like the Vande Bharat Express, Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, and Duronto Express. These trains link Bhopal to key cities in India, further enhancing the station’s significance and usage. In a country with more than 7,300 stations and millions of daily visitors, this station is a beacon of what Indian Railways can achieve in the future.
