Nestled in the heart of Switzerland lies a marvel of engineering and a testament to human innovation: the Stoosbahn, also known as the Schwyz–Stoos funicular. The Stoosbahn boasts an impressive gradient of 110% (47.7°), making it not only the steepest funicular railway in Switzerland and Europe but also claiming the title of the world’s steepest. This remarkable feat surpasses its predecessor, the Gelmerbahn, and even outdoes the renowned Katoomba Scenic Railway in Australia, holding a Guinness World Record for its remarkable incline.

The carriages of the Stoosbahn are ingeniously designed to adapt to the extreme gradient of the track. Shaped like barrels, these cabins rotate to ensure that passengers remain upright throughout the journey.

The 1.7-kilometer (1.1-mile) journey from the Hintere Schlattli to Stoos is an experience in itself. As the funicular ascends, passengers are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding Alpine landscape. They traverse two bridges and pass through three tunnels along the way.

Despite the challenging terrain, the Stoosbahn swiftly transports passengers from Schwyz to Stoos in just 4 to 7 minutes. During this short yet exhilarating ride, travellers ascend a staggering 744 meters. Ultimately, they arrive at the upper station situated amidst the idyllic mountain village.
