Lesser-Known Destinations On Card For The New Year
In the last few years, we saw people travelling to exotic locations and spending big on vacations. However, it looks like the new year will see some changes in this behaviour of travelling. According to the latest trend reports from Expedia and Booking.com, travellers are all keen to travel to quieter, lesser-known, and less crowded places in 2025.
As per Expedia’s ‘Unpack ’25’ trend report, 63% of travellers said they will visit an off-beaten-track destination on their next trip. For this report, they surveyed 25,000 respondents from 19 countries to understand the global view. While talking to CNBC, James Marshall, Vice President of Global Air Accounts at Expedia said that this shift is due to many popular destinations becoming “quite overcrowded.”
Based on Expedia’s flight search data from September 1, 2023, to August 31, 2024, people have shown great interest in the following destinations –
1. Reims, France
2. Brescia, Italy
3. Cozumel, Mexico
4. Santa Barbara, California
5. Waikato, New Zealand
6. Girona, Spain
7. Fukuoka, Japan
8. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
9. Krabi, Thailand
10. Canmore, Canada
Trend Reports Show Travellers Prefer Cheaper & Relaxing Vacation In 2025
As per the two trend reports for 2025, there are a few reasons for this shift to less-crowded locations. First and foremost, people wish to travel to different places and that’s why this trend is on the rise. Furthermore, lesser-known destinations are cheaper and more relaxing as there is less crowd.
While talking to CNBC, Expedia Group’s Chief Commercial Officer Greg Schulze said that travel has become more expensive over the years. That’s why travelling to detour destinations can be economical and offer a better experience to the travellers. He further added that social media, television shows, and movies are also influencing people’s choices of travel.
