Bengaluru’s railway stations handle lakhs of passengers every day, leading to overcrowding. To manage this growing rush, the city is likely to get a major new railway terminal in Yelahanka. The proposed terminal aims to handle rising passenger traffic and ease the load on current stations. What makes it stand out is its design, which is likely to be inspired by a modern railway terminal in China.
Bengaluru To Soon Get China-Inspired Railway Terminal
Bengaluru is likely to get a major new railway terminal in Yelahanka. As per Moneycontrol, South Western Railway (SWR) has proposed an airport-style, multi-level station worth ₹6,000 crore. It will be inspired by the Hangzhou railway terminal in China. The project will come up partly on the Railway Wheel Factory (RWF) land in Yelahanka.
The terminal is planned across 20 acres. Around 15 acres will be taken from RWF land, along with two acres of private land. The plan also includes using the existing Yelahanka station yard and nearby railway staff quarters.
This project will bring a big upgrade to the area. While the current Yelahanka station has just five platforms, the new terminal could have as many as 16. It will also include 10 stabling lines and 15 pit lines.

India’s First Fully Elevated Coaching Terminal
The terminal is likely to be India’s first fully elevated coaching terminal. According to Moneycontrol, like Hangzhou, the Bengaluru terminal will grow vertically instead of spreading out horizontally. This approach helps save space in a city where land is costly.
The station will have five levels. It will include a basement, ground floor, and three upper levels. One of the highlights we are excited about is the train tracks. They will be built on lower levels, while passenger areas such as concourses, ticket counters, waiting halls, and platforms will be placed above. To avoid crowding, arriving and departing passengers will use separate levels. Arriving passengers will exit through a lower level, while departing passengers will enter through the main concourse, complete ticketing and security checks, and then move up to the platforms.
The terminal will connect directly to the Kogilu Cross Metro station on the Blue Line and will also have an elevated road link. The main entry will be from the Yelahanka–Doddaballapur highway.
