Travel time between India and Mongolia has been reduced from around 13-18 hours to about five hours with the launch of direct, non-stop flights between New Delhi and Ulaanbaatar on Monday. Read on to know more.
Direct Flight Between India & Mongolia Begins
The first flight from Ulaanbaatar arrived at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport at 7:20 am on Monday, while the first return flight departed New Delhi at 4:37 pm. The weekly service will operate every Monday, with a journey time of around five hours, according to a press release by the Embassy of India in Mongolia. The flights will be operated by Mongolia-based Hunnu Air, offering passengers a direct alternative to routes that previously involved transit through Hong Kong, Beijing or Incheon.
The direct connection is expected to make travel between India and Mongolia easier for tourists, medical travellers and business passengers. The embassy said the service could boost spiritual tourism from Mongolia to India, particularly to Buddhist heritage sites. It could also encourage Indian tourists to visit Mongolia for winter tourism and explore its natural landscapes and historical heritage.

The New Air Link To Support Trade & Commerce Between India & Mongolia
The new air link is also expected to support trade and commerce between the two countries. According to the embassy, faster connectivity could allow cargo to be transported more quickly and at a lower cost.
The service is part of efforts to strengthen the existing bilateral strategic partnership between India and Mongolia. The direct flight was announced during the joint press conference between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mongolian President U Khurelsukh at Hyderabad House during the latter’s state visit to India in October 2025.

Indian Ambassador to Mongolia Atul Malhari Gotsurve and Hunnu Air CEO Munkhjargal worked with various stakeholders to operationalise the service. The Embassy of India in Ulaanbaatar also thanked India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Mongolia’s Ministry of Road and Transport for their support in establishing the new connection.
Both India and Mongolia offer free visas to each other’s nationals, while an e-visa facility is also available for citizens of both countries.
