Mangaluru Rail Network To Expand Under The South Western Railway
According to reports by The Indian Express, at present, the Mangaluru region is served by three different railway jurisdictions: Southern Railway, South Western Railway and Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL). Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw discussed the issue during a meeting with MPs from Kerala and said the division of the area between multiple jurisdictions was creating operational difficulties.
According to the Railways, trains arriving in Mangaluru from the Goa or Hassan sides may pass through different railway jurisdictions and interchange points before reaching the city. This can make coordination more complicated and potentially contribute to delays and congestion. To address the issue, the Railways plans to rationalise the jurisdiction of the Mangaluru railway area and place it under a single zone, South Western Railway.

The Move Aims At Better Train Improvement
The proposed change would transfer the entire Mangaluru area to the Mysuru Division of South Western Railway. According to the Ministry of Railways, having a unified operational boundary would eliminate interchange conflicts between different zones and allow trains to be handled more efficiently.
The move is being presented as an operational rationalisation rather than an administrative restructuring. The aim is to streamline train movement and improve coordination across the network serving Mangaluru. The Mangaluru-Hassan route already falls within the Mysuru Division of SWR. Official SWR documents also list Mangaluru among the stations and sections under the division.
Kerala Railway Infrastructure Gets A Boost
During the meeting, the minister also highlighted developments in Kerala’s railway network. He said the state has achieved 100% railway electrification, while several stations are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The Railways has also been adding train services and stoppages in Kerala. In February 2026, the ministry said Tirur was being served by 90 train services and noted the introduction of the Nagercoil-Mangaluru Amrit Bharat Express, along with a new stoppage for the Hisar-Coimbatore Express.

The ministry has also continued to work on railway infrastructure across the region. The Bengaluru-Mangaluru route, for instance, became fully electrified after the difficult Sakleshpur-Subramanya Road ghat section was completed in December 2025.
