Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is a beautiful destination known for its historic architecture and world-class museums. But a holiday there could soon get expensive as the city is planning to raise its tourist tax to 20%. Here’s what it means for Indian travellers.
Amsterdam Plans To Increase Tourist Tax To 20%
Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most-visited destinations and attracts millions of travellers from across the globe every year. The destination, which already has one of the highest tourist taxes in Europe, is planning to raise it even further. According to The Independent, the Amsterdam government is considering new tourism policies, including a 20% tourist tax, closure of the cruise port, and the buyout of businesses from the city centre.
The tourist tax is currently set at 12% of the overnight accommodation price or a €15 (₹1,652 approx.) tourist tax for day-trippers. However, under the new proposed rules from the city council’s coalition government, this rate could increase further.

What Does This Increase Mean For Indian Travellers?
According to The Independent, officials are hoping to introduce a 16% tax in 2027 and then increase it by 1% every year until it reaches 20% by 2030. But what is the reason behind increasing the tourist tax? We all know the city enjoys immense popularity among travellers from all over the world. Tourism contributes to the city’s economy, yes, but at the same time, it also places pressure on public spaces, quality of life, and municipal facilities.
This is why the coalition has decided to increase the tourist tax. According to officials, this would make visitors contribute a fair share towards the city’s management and maintenance. The Amsterdam government would use the revenue from the higher tourist tax to make the city cleaner, safer, and more livable for residents and visitors.
For Indian travellers, it basically means that a trip to Amsterdam could get a little more expensive. You will now need to consider this cost while planning a travel budget for your trip.
