Getting a pack of cooking oil might just get easier. The Indian government has now asked companies to manufacture cooking oil only in nine standard pack sizes. This would help consumers compare the prices of different brands easily and avoid confusion. Keep reading to know more about this in detail.

Cooking Oil To Be Sold In 9 Standard Pack Sizes

To protect consumers from misleading packaging and make price and quantity comparisons easier, the Indian government has announced a new rule. Under the new rules, cooking oil will be sold only in nine standard pack sizes. According to News18, this new rule applies to most cooking oils, including mustard oil, soybean oil, groundnut oil, rice bran oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil, and blended oils.

The government also expects that this decision will enhance transparency in the market and reduce confusion among consumers. The Department of Consumer Affairs have fixed only nine standard pack sizes for edible oils. Cooking oil companies will now be allowed to sell oils in the following pack sizes:

  • 200 ml/g
  • 500 ml/g
  • 1 litre/kg
  • 2 litres/kg
  • 3 litres/kg
  • 4 litres/kg
  • 5 litres/kg
  • 15 litres/kg
  • 20 litres/kg

New Rule Aims To Make Price Comparison Easier

According to News18, until now, companies often sold cooking oils in pack sizes such as 900 ml or 950 ml. This made it difficult for consumers to compare actual prices across different brands. Under the new rules, if an oil pack is sold in litres, its corresponding weight must also be clearly mentioned on the pack.

The government has given three months to manufacturers, packers, and importers to comply with the new rules. If any company wishes to implement the changes immediately, they are allowed to do so. So, if you are someone who often gets confused between different cooking oil pack sizes, this new rule will surely help you.
