Applying For A Schengen Visa? Here’s Why Europe’s Visa System Is Facing Fresh Scrutiny

For Indian travellers planning a trip to Europe, the Schengen visa journey no longer starts at the embassy gate. Instead, it will begin at a private visa application centre run by VFS Global, which is the outsourcing monopoly that today sits at the centre of Europe’s visa ecosystem. Scroll down to know more.

Why Is The Schengen Visa Facing Scrutiny?

As per a report by News18, over the past few weeks, VFS Global has come under renewed scrutiny. A Politico report has emphasised issues raised in internal European Union reports over data handling, fee transparency and the growing dependency of governments on private contract workers for visa administration.

VFS Global has strongly denied allegations of violations and maintains that it operates under strict supervision from governments. According to reports by The Indian Express, the company stated that it serves 71 governments and operates under rigorous oversight. The company has continually emphasised that it does not decide who gets visas and only handles administrative and non-judgemental tasks on behalf of embassies and consulates. Yet the controversy surrounding VFS highlights a deeper shift in how countries, especially in Europe, manage borders, migration and travel demand.

Europe Government Outsources Visa Process

European governments began outsourcing their visa processing over the past two decades as international travel increased and security checks became more complex after the 9/11 attacks. Managing large visa operations inside embassies became expensive and labour-intensive, prompting governments to shift administrative tasks like document collection, biometric registration, and appointment handling to private outsourcing firms.

The model helped governments minimise operational costs, manage crowds outside embassies, expand visa services across multiple cities, and process applications more effectively. However, critics argue that while governments still make final visa decisions, the actual candidate experience has successfully become private. Today, most Schengen visa applicants in India must go through authorised visa centres, as embassies no longer directly handle routine applications.

Recently, Europe’s outsourced visa system has come under scrutiny amid reports highlighting concerns around personal data handling, fee transparency, and oversight gaps. Since visa centres handle highly sensitive information, including passports, bank statements, salary records, and biometric data, the issue has led to debate over privacy and accountability.

Another major criticism revolves around rising costs. Apart from official visa fees, applicants often pay additional service charges and optional add-ons such as courier return, SMS alerts, premium lounges, and prime-time appointments. Many travellers feel pressured into purchasing these services due to appointment shortages or fears of delays.
