Stampede At Ashok Dham Temple In Bihar

A large number of devotees gathered at the Ashok Dham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai during Shravan Somvaar to offer prayers and sacred water to Lord Shiva. Two trains full of devotees had also reached the Lakhisarai railway station, adding to the rush at the temple. The massive crowd led to a stampede after a bamboo barricade broke and an electric pole reportedly snapped at the site. This caused panic among people, who started running in different directions.

The incident reportedly happened at around 6:40 am on August 17. District officials reached the spot to control the situation. Several people lost their lives, while at least 12 others were injured. The injured devotees were taken to Sadar Government Hospital for treatment. An X user, @WithLoveBihar, posted a video showing the rush inside the temple.

Further Investigation Is Underway

Authorities are expecting the death toll and number of injured people to rise further. The huge rush of devotees caused the barricades to break, leading people to fall on each other and creating chaos at the temple. Many people also fell sick due to the extreme humidity and suffocation caused by the overcrowded surroundings.

The crowd of devotees had started pouring into the temple from the night of August 16. There was reportedly already a queue of over six kilometres, and pilgrims had to wait for an average of four hours to enter the temple. The crowd on the morning of August 17 also grew restless, which worsened the situation.
