Delhi Plans Unified Transport Authority To Bring Metro, Buses & Rail Services Under One Roof

While Delhi’s public transport network is extensive, its various transport agencies operate independently, with limited coordination in route planning, infrastructure development, and service delivery. This, the government noticed, often makes daily travel inconvenient for residents. To address this, the Delhi government is drafting legislation to establish the Delhi Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (DUMTA). Here’s all you need to know.

Unifying Delhi’s Fragmented Transport Ecosystem

According to Hindustan Times, to unify all modes of transport like Metro, buses, regional rail, railways, and feeder services, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta announced an institutional reform. They are all set to create a new agency called the Delhi Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (DUMTA), which aims to bring together the Capital’s fragmented transport ecosystem under one roof.

In a statement released by the Chief Minister’s Office, it was shared that with DUMTA, the authorities hope to bring cohesion to Delhi’s urban mobility system. With this, they wish to make the city’s public transport more accessible, efficient, and citizen-focussed.

More About Delhi Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority

As per reports, a task force led by Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma is drafting the Bill to bring the Delhi Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority into effect. “By placing all modes of transport like metro, buses, regional rail, railways, and feeder services within a single planning jurisdiction, we will ensure that mobility solutions are integrated,” the CMO’s statement read.

According to officials, the need to restructure Delhi’s scattered transport system emerged keeping in mind the growing issues of congestion and pollution. HT further reported that the proposed law includes plans to create a dedicated Delhi Urban Transport Fund (DUTF) to support long-term, integrated mobility planning.
