Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. But to undertake this yatra, you do not need just warm clothing and your passport. You also require several other travel documents. Without them, pilgrims can face the risk of being stranded. Keep reading to know what documents you have to carry before you start planning your yatra.

Travel Documents Required For Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The External Affairs Ministry has now advised Indian citizens not to start their Kailash Mansarovar Yatra without all the required travel documents. The sacred yatra, which is undertaken by thousands of devotees, involves much more than just booking flights and packing warm clothes.

According to News18, the government has advised Indians to carry all documents after 52 Indian devotees travelling to Kailash Mansarovar through Nepal were stranded. They apparently lacked the mandatory permits required to enter Tibet. Several travellers had assumed that carrying a passport and a Chinese visa would be sufficient. However, that is wrong. The yatra requires several other documents too.

The mandatory documents required for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Nepal are:

  • A valid passport
  • A valid Chinese visa
  • A Tibet Travel Permit

Different Routes Of The Yatra

According to News18, unlike regular visas, these permits cannot usually be obtained independently. They are typically arranged by tour operators in coordination with Nepal and China. Moreover, the government has also advised travellers to book their pilgrimage only through trusted and authorised tour operators who are familiar with the latest cross-border travel rules and regulations.

Reportedly, travellers can undertake the sacred yatra through multiple routes. Each one comes with different requirements.

  1. Nepal Route: This is the most popular route. Pilgrims usually travel to Kathmandu before heading towards Tibet by road or chartered flights. Travellers require additional permits mandated by Chinese authorities.
  2. Lipulekh Pass Route (Uttarakhand): This traditional route passes through Uttarakhand and involves several days of trekking before crossing into Tibet. This is one of the most preferred options among devotees. However, it is a little physically challenging.
  3. Nathu La Pass Route (Sikkim): Here, pilgrims travel through Sikkim before entering Tibet. This route is much less strenuous than the Lipulekh Pass Route.

Apart from this, pilgrims should also keep in mind that it is important to keep both physical and digital copies of all travel documents. Plus, verify all permits before leaving India and ensure your passport has sufficient validity for international travel.
