Mumbai Parks To See Extra Security & Police Dressed In Plain Clothes Soon, Here’s Why

Parks in Mumbai are all set to get a lot safer. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), along with Mumbai Police, is planning to conduct surprise inspections in open gardens and increase security. This comes after rising concerns about misuse and illegal activities in the parks. Here’s what the BMC is planning to do.

Are Mumbai Parks Getting Misused?

According to a report by Mid-Day, many complaints have surfaced that Mumbai’s open gardens and parks are being used by drug peddlers and anti-social elements. These issues were raised by several MLAs in the recently held state assembly. According to them, parks meant for women, families and children are being used for drinking and other illegal activities. This means these parks are no longer fully safe for women, children and senior citizens to spend their evening time.

This is the reason Mumbai Police has now joined hands with the BMC to conduct joint drives and surprise inspections in the city’s gardens and open spaces. Shiv Sena MLA Dilip Lande also questioned the authorities regarding negligence, saying they are not doing enough to tackle the problem. Reportedly, even auto-rickshaws parked on roads are being used as spots for drinking liquor and consuming tobacco and other banned substances.

Better Security Planned For Gardens & Open Spaces

According to Mid-Day, BJP Mumbai unit president and MLA Ameet Satam demanded that the government conduct a proper audit of all open spaces and public gardens in Mumbai. Another leader also called for better-trained security staff at parks, instead of relying on a single watchman, as one person cannot monitor such large areas.

Along with surprise visits, the authorities may now also appoint police personnel to patrol the parks in plain clothes. They will look like a common person to avoid attracting attention. The administration may deploy additional security from the state government’s guard force, who are better trained to handle tough situations.
