Here’s Where You Can Watch Total Solar Eclipse

On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will occur when the Moon completely blocks the Sun in parts of Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, northeastern Portugal, and Russia. According to NDTV, a partial solar eclipse will also be visible across the United Kingdom, northeastern United States, Canada, many parts of Europe, and northwestern Africa.

Before we get into how to witness this celestial event safely, let us briefly explain what actually happens. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun from view. During a total solar eclipse, the sky darkens, and it almost feels like night in the middle of the day. The temperature may also drop for a minute or two. Witnessing a total solar eclipse is an amazing experience, but watching it without proper eye protection can permanently damage your eyesight.

How To Watch The Eclipse Safely

According to NDTV, NASA has shared a few important tips to safely witness the eclipse. Here is what you should keep in mind:

• Wear eclipse glasses (not regular sunglasses) or use an indirect viewing method.
• Check your eclipse glasses for scratches, punctures or tears before using them.
• Wear eclipse glasses during all partial phases of the eclipse to protect your eyes.
• Never look at the Sun through a camera lens, binoculars or a telescope while wearing eclipse glasses. The concentrated sunlight can seriously damage your eyes.
• Since you may be outdoors for a long time, apply sunscreen and stay protected from direct sunlight.

Unfortunately for astronomy lovers in India, this total solar eclipse will not be visible from the country. The eclipse will occur during the night in India (9:45 pm on August 12 to 2:15 am on August 13), and the Sun will already be below the horizon.
