Over the years, Vietnam has emerged as one of the most loved holiday destinations, and now the country is taking a step toward boosting its socio-economic growth by attracting foreign talent. Vietnam Launches Long-Term Visa Exemption Program
According to NDTV, Vietnam recently announced a long-term visa exemption program. The country is introducing the Special Visa Exemption Card (SVEC) policy, issuing Decree No. 221/2025/ND-CP, that will come into effect from August 15, 2025. Under this new program, tourists can get a visa waiver card in both paper and digital formats.
With the visa waiver card, skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and experts can live in the country for extended periods without applying for a traditional visa every time. In some cases, this card is eligible for five years. This card is only for those foreign nationals who can help in the development of Vietnam. It will be valid for up to five years and can expire 30 days before the holder’s passport expires.
Moreover, the individuals who are nominated by authorised agencies or organisations can apply for a Level 2 electronic identification (e-ID) account. It will give them access to digital government services during their stay in Vietnam.
How To Apply For Special Visa Exemption Card?
The obtain the special visa exemption card, the applicant must apply to the Immigration Department. After receiving your application, the department will verify it and issue a digital SVEC (Form NC-01). Further, they will notify the applicant whether he/she is eligible for a digital SVEC (Form NB-01) or a physical chip-embedded card (Form NC-02).
As per NDTV reports, if the application is rejected, the Immigration Department will provide a written application to the agency stating the reason for rejection. The processing time for this card for high-level state guests will be within three working days, for experts, scholars, investors, experts, sports/cultural/tourism figures, and approved invitees within five working days. Lastly, a physical chip-embedded card will be provided within 7 working days.
All foreign nationals eligible for an SVEC will receive a temporary 90-day resident stamp on each visit. If the validity of the card is less than 90 days, then the cardholder will be allowed to live in Vietnam only till the mentioned days on the card. The Immigration Department can cancel the SVEC card if any agency asks them to or if the holder no longer meets the eligibility criteria.
