The incident took place on December 15, 2025, during the official inauguration of Line 4 of the Tren Ligero (light rail) in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Jalisco, Mexico. The event marked the ceremonial first run of the new rail line, attended by senior officials, media personnel, and invited guests.
The station platform was crowded as dignitaries gathered for the launch. The train was scheduled to depart on time, with the state governor and other officials already on board. However, Tlajomulco Mayor Gerardo Quirino Velázquez arrived a few moments late.
As the doors closed and the train began to move, the mayor realised he had missed it. In a scene caught on camera, he ran along the platform trying to catch up. He sprinted beside the moving train and even reached out, but he could not board in time. The train continued smoothly, leaving the mayor behind on the platform.

Here’s How Netizens React
The video of the mayor running behind the train has gone viral across the internet. Many netizens shared their reactions and compared the situation with India.
Many users pointed out that in Mexico, even the mayor had to run for the train, while in India, trains often wait for VIPs. Others said the contrast clearly shows how one system follows schedules, while the other bends around politicians instead of prioritising the public. One user said, “At least it runs on schedule.”
Mayor Velázquez also shared the video on social media and addressed the situation with humour. In his caption, written in Spanish, he reassured people by saying the train comes every nine minutes. His message highlighted the punctual nature of the new transit system rather than his own delay.
