In the last few years, more people have been travelling abroad to take breaks and explore new cultures. To make travel smoother but regulated, the UK has introduced a new rule called Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This is mainly for short trips like tourism, business, or short study visits. It’s a simple digital travel permission, so keep reading to know how it works!

UK Introduces Electronic Travel Authorisation Rules

The UK has introduced a new travel rule called the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) from 25 February 2026. According to Moneycontrol, this rule applies to travellers from 85 countries, including the US, Canada, and France. Indian travellers do not need to apply for an ETA. The ETA rule mainly applies to travellers from visa-free countries. So, if you visit the UK without a visa, you will now need an ETA before boarding your flight, train, or ship. The ETA is not a visa or a tax, just a digital permission to travel. Even after getting an ETA, you must still pass UK border control checks on arrival. If you don’t have a valid ETA,  transport operators may refuse boarding.

Most travellers from visa-free countries need to apply for this ETA. If you are taking connecting flights, you may also need an ETA if you pass through UK immigration control. However, if you only change flights at airports like Heathrow or Manchester without going through immigration, you do not need an ETA. British and Irish citizens are not included in this rule.

More About This New Rule

Dual nationals with British citizenship cannot enter the UK using only a foreign passport. They must have a British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement. These documents can take time to process, so it is best to apply early. As per Moneycontrol, the UK has also brought a fully digital visa system called eVisa. This digital record shows your visa status, work permission, or study rights. You still need to visit a Visa Application Centre once for biometric verification, and your passport will be returned on the same day. Earlier, passports were kept longer until visa stickers were issued.

The ETA costs over ₹2,000 and allows multiple visits to the UK for up to six months per trip within two years, or until your passport expires. You do not need to carry a printed copy, but it is good to keep one for reference. Travellers should apply at least three working days before travel using the official ETA app by uploading passport details, a photograph, and answering security questions. This system makes travel safer, quicker, and more digital.
