The Lahori Gate Haveli in Old Delhi is a nearly 100-year-old heritage structure. But now, it is being transformed into the Shahjahanabad Museum and Interpretation Centre. Here’s everything you need to know about this anticipated project and why it is such a big deal.

Lahori Gate Haveli To Become A Museum In Old Delhi

According to Hindustan Times, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has now approved a project to transform the restored Lahori Gate Haveli in Old Delhi into a museum and interpretation centre. The place will be dedicated to the rich history and culture of Shahjahanabad. The haveli was set up in 1929 and looks out onto a market square, where lanes emerging from the Khari Baoli spice bazaar, Sadar Bazar and Old Delhi Railway Station converge.

You would like to know that the Lahori Gate Haveli was built as a grand private mansion. But over the decades, it has also served as a municipal dispensary. Its restoration was completed last year, and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) has now granted in-principle approval for the museum project.

Visitors will need to purchase tickets to visit the facility in the future. Moreover, the museum will also have space for visitors to gather, audio-visual rooms and a cafeteria on the first floor.

What’s more? This museum inside the Lahori Gate Haveli will also feature representations of the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Town Hall, traditional havelis and temples. Different sections inside will be dedicated to grocery markets, dry fruits, handicrafts and Meena Bazaar in the area.
