Ujjain Police Bust 9 Fake Mahakal Booking Sites After Devotees Report Online Fraud

According to Hindustan Times, scammers launched multiple fake Mahakal websites that falsely promised hotel bookings under the Mahakaleshwar Temple Trust. These websites used deceptive names and layouts that closely mimicked official platforms, convincing unsuspecting devotees to share personal details and make advance payments. Victims only realised the fraud upon arrival in Ujjain, where no reservations were actually made in their name.

The police, acting on complaints from several devotees, investigated the digital footprints of the portals. The cyber cell tracked the websites, identified patterns of deception, and confirmed that they had no links to the temple authorities. The domains were used solely for duping pilgrims planning their spiritual journey to the temple.

Prompt Police Action

As reported by Hindustan Times, the Ujjain Superintendent of Police directed the cyber cell to immediately initiate action to block the fake Mahakal websites. In response, the authorities successfully took down all nine fraudulent domains. Investigations into the individuals or groups operating these websites remain ongoing.

The Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and a prominent Hindu pilgrimage site, sees thousands of devotees daily. This surge in religious tourism made it an attractive target for online scammers. The police have urged pilgrims to use only verified sources for booking accommodation or services linked to the temple.

Rising Trend Of Online Religious Scams

The incident reflects a broader trend where religious pilgrims are increasingly becoming targets of cyber fraud. As more devotees rely on online bookings, scammers continue to develop new methods to exploit digital platforms. The crackdown in Ujjain marks a significant step in protecting pilgrims and preserving faith in temple authorities.
