UK Restaurant Spells Biryani As ‘Buryani’; Calls It A ‘Mogul’ Dish

Biryani

We often find western dishes spelt incorrectly in local Indian food joints. We have come across spellings like dognuts instead of doughnuts, pitzas instead of pizzas, vag chow instead of veg chow and even nuggest instead of nuggets. While these vendors are often judged for these mistakes, have you ever wondered how western countries spell Indian food? Recently, an Indian resident staying in the UK has shared a picture of a restaurant menu in Scotland that has spelt our favourite biryani as ‘buryani’. And they have also called the dish a ‘Mogul’ dish.

Biryani Gets A Bizarre Spelling In The UK And We Can’t Stop Laughing!

Biryani had originated in the Mughal kitchens and different parts of India have given their own twist to the dish. There is a constant debate in India among different kinds of biryanis like Hyderabadi biryani, Lucknowi biryani and Kolkata biryani. But this Scottish food joint went a notch higher and twisted the name of the biryani itself. The description of the dish on the menu reads, “A royal dish of Mogul origin consisting of chicken, lamb etc, cooked with saffron rice ( real basmati rice)”. The menu shows the different kinds of biryanis sold at the restaurant. The list includes Vegetable Buryani, Chicken Buryani, Lamb Buryani and Prawn Buryani.
