There are a lot of reasons why Uttar Pradesh is infamous and a butt of many jokes, and recently a new jewel was added to that crown. A sophisticated airstrip constructed in Kanpur Dehat, built recently in the year 2017 is now being used by drivers learning to drive, and we cannot decide who we feel about it.
What Is It?
Constructed in 2017, the airstrip is located in Mahatrabad village of Maitha sub-division. The construction cost Rs 331 crore and has not been in use for the last two years.

Well, to put it correctly, it has not been used by any airplane, as it has become an ideal place for driving school trainers to teach driving. The airstrip remained unguarded, thus becoming easily accessible to locals.
While the village head tried to dissuade people from using the airstrip as a place to learn driving, he says that it will be impossible without the presence of guards and security in the premises, as the size of the road makes it an attraction for ambitious drivers.

What’s More?
The airstrip is 3 km long and 450 meters wide, thus making it easy to drive as well as reverse the vehicle. It could not be made completely functional because it wasn’t fully built. Only the runway and the boundary had been built. The airstrip needs air network, a control room, an administrative building, guest house and staff quarters.
The airstrip was built keeping many factors in mind, Cricket teams having matches in Kanpur used to land in Lucknow and make their way to Kanpur by bus. But unfortunately, a great idea did not meet it’s expected the end.
There are talks of allocating the abandoned airstrip to private flying clubs so that they could look after its maintenance. This does sound like the best option as this will also ensure regular maintenance of the airstrip.
