The tourism sector is flourishing rapidly in India. Travel enthusiasts are exploring scenic and iconic tourist destinations nationwide. Extra efforts are being made to bolster the existing numbers and welcome more visitors to each state. One of the Indian states that has dedicated definite plans to promote tourism is Uttar Pradesh. The UP government prioritises revitalising its tourist places and aims to attract over 80 crore tourists in the next few years. Let’s take a look at the action plans.

The state is home to some of India’s most iconic tourist attractions. From the incredible Taj Mahal in Agra to the renowned Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh is a historically rich state. Now, the government wishes to welcome more tourists here and the departments are working on significant plans to witness an uptick of visitors in the state and boost the sector by five times in the next few years.

Two of the biggest steps taken by the government are revitalising famous tourist locations and improving local transport infrastructure, a government spokesperson shared. According to a recently released press release, these two measures have helped the state notice a surge in visitors in the past. Over 48 crore travellers visited Uttar Pradesh in 2023.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the UP government aims to attract more and more tourists and increase their footfall to over 80 crore by 2028. A major goal is to promote the tourism sector’s Gross Value Added (GVA) to ₹70,000 crore within 2028. The GVA was reported at ₹11,000 crore in 2017.

In addition to all these steps, the government also has plans to develop 12 tourism circuits in the state. Preparations for this initiative have begun already. From surveying famous locations to conducting a gap analysis to discover locations for improvements, there are many plans for this project.

Tourist Footfall Is On The Rise

In the past few years, this beautiful Indian state witnessed a noticeable jump in the number of visitors exploring here. Tourist footfall reached to 23 crore in 2016-17. Post-COVID-19, the figures rose to 48 crore in 2023-24. This incredible surge reported an increase of about 51 per cent. Now, the government is focusing on monetising famous destinations, improving branding and promotion of assets, and offering exemplary experiences with world-class facilities.

The government is also increasing the number of accommodation facilities, especially in famous cities to provide ample options to cater to the needs of more travellers. Spiritual tourism is a major part of Uttar Pradesh’s tourism sector. There are many iconic religious destinations to visit here. Devotees from all around visit here to offer prayers in Ayodhya, Kashi, Mathura, Naimisharanya, Prayagraj, and more.
