US Company Sells Panties With Ganesha Prints; Upsets Hindus Across The World

In this digital age, when different cultures and traditions co-exist together, there is a fine line that people must adhere, to maintain peace amongst everyone. In the USA, there is an approximate number of three million Indians residing there for decades now. On this note, an e-commerce company Etsy has angered the faith of the Hindu community, by selling panties with Ganesha prints. The company earlier removed its Ganesha ashtrays and toilet seats, but now resorts to selling these Ganesha printed panties. Read on to know more.

E-Commerce Company Etsy Sells Ganesha Printed Panties & Angers Hindus

In a protest led by the Universal Society of Hinduism, they urge Brooklyn-based e-commerce company Etsy to apologize and cease printing Sexy Ganesh Thong Panties carrying the image of Hindu deity Lord Ganesh. The protesters state it is highly inappropriate. Previously as well, Etsy had come under the radar of the Hindu population living in the USA after creating toilet-seats, flip-flops, and ashtray carrying the image of Lord Ganesha. These Sexy Ganesh Thong Panties costs $16.95 (₹1,253.98).

Rajan Zed the President of the Universal Society of Hinduism, said to media houses,  “Etsy should be more aware that Lord Ganesha is a revered deity in Hinduism and meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to be adorned on one’s crotch”. Mr. Rajan also went ahead to say that the inappropriate use of Hindu gods for commercial purposes hurts the sentiments of Hindus. He urged Etsy and its CEO, Josh Silverman, to offer a formal apology and withdraw Sexy Ganesh Thong Panties. This is not the first time the company had offended Hindus with their lewd depiction of Hindu gods in daily items.

The US Company Earlier Sold Ganesha Printed Toilet Seat & Ashtray; Later Removed Them

Mr. Rajan asks if offering products like the Sexy Ganesh Thong panties matches Etsy’s commitment of ‘using the power of business to strengthen communities and empower people’ and its stated mission to ‘keep commerce human.’ Etsy was started in an apartment in Brooklyn in 2005. And now, headquarters in Dumbo neighbourhood. It has additional offices in Germany, Ireland, UK, India, France, Canada, Chicago, San Francisco, Hudson (New York).  Well, we hope the US company removes these products and follows cultural appropriation to truly empower communities across the world.
