For the first time since 2016, the United States passport has slipped to 10th place in this year’s global ranking of the world’s most powerful travel documents. In 2016, the US passport was ranked fourth, and since then, it has slipped almost every year. Here’s what it means.
US Passport Drops To 10th Place In Henley Passport Index
According to Times Now, after being ranked fourth in the Henley Passport Index, the US passport fell to fifth in both 2017 and 2018. In 2019, it slipped to sixth, and then to seventh, where it remained until 2024. Last year, it dropped to ninth, and now it has fallen to 10th place, tied with Iceland.
The latest ranking comes from the Henley Passport Index, which measures how many of the world’s 227 travel destinations passport holders from 199 countries can enter without needing a visa in advance. More than 30 countries now rank ahead of the United States on the index. This means that Americans now need to apply for a visa or entry permissions in countries where they used to travel freely.

Singapore Tops The Ranking In The Index
Now, let’s talk about the country ranked first. According to Times Now, Singapore currently holds the No.1 spot in the index. Japan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates are tied for second place. Sweden ranks third, while several European countries, including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Spain, are tied for fourth place. Countries like Austria, Greece, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, Czechia, Latvia, Hungary, Poland, and more are also in the top 10.
The US passport’s drop to 10th place does not mean it has become weak or less useful. Instead, it shows that many other countries have expanded visa-free access for their citizens, allowing them to visit more countries faster and without requiring a visa in advance.
